As of 2020, recent studies have found that marijuana use within college students has increased from 38% in 2015 to 44% in 2020. The six percent increase highlights the drastic effects that covid-19 has had on this population. In an article released by the National Institute of Health, the director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse, Nora D. Volkow M.D stated,
“The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changed the way that young people interact with one another and offers us an opportunity to examine whether drug taking behavior has shifted through these changes,”
Marijuana use has not only increased within the population but also in the amount of times it is consumed in a day. The 8% of the college students who reported marijuana use in 2020 also reported using the substance daily or near daily. In future research, I want to explore how and from whomst this audience purchases the substance from and look into the positive and negative effects of marijuana use in these young adults.
